CHAPTER SEVEN

„How did you get in here?“

Totally unnerved by the shock of finding Lang Sterling waiting like a coiled leopard in her darkened living room, Kali gasped out the first words which came to mind.

He came toward her, his leanness faintly illuminated by the pale light filtering in through the window behind him. His face, however, remained shadowed. Awkwardly Kali scratched for the light switch behind her and flipped it on.

„I thought you knew I’m good with mechanical things,“ he drawled laconically, coming to a halt a few paces away from her.

„Robots, locks, you name it.“

„Lang! Stop looking at me like that and explain yourself.“ Kali burst forth in an infuriated tone as she shut the door behind her with a small, furious little slam. „This is my apartment and I don’t recall inviting you here this evening!“

His eyes narrowed and there was an implacable cast to his taut features. He was radiating the anger of a possessive, territorial male.

Kali’s instincts were alive to it even while her brain told her he had absolutely no right to be creating this scene.

Feet braced slightly, aggressively apart, Lang stood in a pair of faded, close-fitting jeans and regarded her with his hands on his hips in a classic stance of intimidating masculinity. The plaid, flannel shirt he wore was open at the collar and a few curls of coppery hair were just barely visible. Once again the roboticist didn’t look at all as a roboticist ought to look, Kali thought fleetingly. Damn the man!

Why couldn’t he play his proper role in life?

„I came by to find out what your business was this evening,“ he told her tightly. „I thought I’d find you hiding here in your apartment, desperately trying to figure out how to handle me. I knew the bit about being unavailable because of business was an excuse but I sure as hell didn’t think you’d have the gall to be out on a date!“

„Gall! If we’re going to talk about sheer gall,“ Kali began, tossing her purse down onto a chair and using the small action as a way of stalking out of his reach, „let’s discuss yours! This amounts to breaking and entering, you know!“ She flung out a hand to indicate his presence in her apartment. „Furthermore, I was out on business, although I don’t know why I should be bothered with defending myself to you! You’re the one who should be coming up with an explanation and an apology!“

„What other explanation is called for, under the circumstances?“

he snapped, shifting his weight slightly to follow her movement across the room.

„What circumstances?“

„Last night!“

Kali felt her breath catch in her throat. „Last night,“ she repeated, dumbfounded. „What’s last night got to do with anything?“

It was the wrong thing to say; she realized that almost instantly.

Instead of following her progress across the room with a glittering green gaze, Lang began closing in on her. A chill flashed up her spine even as she instructed herself not to let him unnerve her.
